What is the Infinite Search?
A Practice in Paying Attention
The Infinite Search is my ongoing research practice, a way of exploring how people create meaning, move through uncertainty, and make sense of their lives. Through writing, photography, and field observation, I follow questions that invite us to look more closely at ourselves and the world around us.
This work lives at the intersection of narrative, design, and human experience. It blends lived moments with quiet reflection, drawing insight from the everyday and the extraordinary, the internal and the expansive.
The Five Lenses
How I See the World
Every exploration connects to one of five themes — ways of understanding what it means to live with intention, creativity, and heart.
About John
John Robert Hatherly
Designer, strategist, writer, and photographer exploring how we find meaning and remain open to life.
I’m drawn to the intersections of story, place, and human experience. Before beginning The Infinite Search, I worked for over a decade in brand and design — partnering with founders, scientists, and mission-driven organizations to clarify who they are and what they’re building.
This project is where all of that converges: a place to follow questions, gather insight from the road, and share what I’m learning along the way.
Outside of this work, you’ll find me in quiet places: reading, hiking, making photographs, or writing from whatever patch of sunlight I can find. This journey continues to ground me, challenge me, and remind me how little and how much it takes to be present.
